Professor Mark Johnson PhD, is a geordie currently working at Leeds Beckett University with two passions: pain and cycling.

His interest in pain started during a BSc Physiology project, investigating the effect of counter-irritation on neuronal activity in the spinal cord. This led to his PhD investigating the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and 30 blissful years of pondering pain and its management!

Over time, Mark's interests have diversified to all aspects of pain, both biomedical and non-biomedical. The research team at Leeds Beckett now investigates pain education, community-support services for persistent pain, and artist-led approaches to help people with pain (such as Unmasking Pain).
